Our June 10, 2024 program meeting focused on outdoor recreation. We heard excellent presentations from two active members of the Metro Washington Association of Blind Athletes, known as MWABA: Amanda Aswell and Chris George. Amanda has been blind since the age of 9. Her husband is in the military, and they have moved around the country for the past 22 years. They now live in Vienna with their 10-year-old daughter. Amanda has been active with MWABA, doing goal ball, tandem biking, and camping. Chris George has been with MWABA since 2019. He is a sighted tandem captain, and now works with another member as a coordinator and ride leader for the cycling program. Amanda and Chris discussed their experiences with tandem biking and camping in addition to shareing information on MWABA’s many other activities. They encouraged individuals who are blind or have low vision to come out to try their activities; they said MWABA is very welcoming, even for beginners.
